Home a Pale blue dot

Home a Pale blue dot. Another Pocket Story.

After travelling 6 billion kilometers, Nasa space probe Voyager 1, turn back its cameras and took a photo of Earth. Today we revisited the pale blue dot that we call Home.

“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."
Carl Sagan.
Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space.

This is the "Pale Blue Dot" photograph of the Earth taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft on July 6, 1990. The Earth is the relatively bright speck of light about halfway across the uppermost sunbeam. The original version of this image can be obtained from NASA. The original caption reads as follows: This narrow-angle color image of the Earth, dubbed 'Pale Blue Dot', is a part of the first ever 'portrait' of the solar system taken by Voyager 1. The spacecraft acquired a total of 60 frames for a mosaic of the solar system from a distance of more than 4 billion miles from Earth and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic. From Voyager's great distance Earth is a mere point of light, less than the size of a picture element even in the narrow-angle camera. Earth was a crescent only 0.12 pixel in size. Coincidentally, Earth lies right in the center of one of the scattered light rays resulting from taking the image so close to the sun. This blown-up image of the Earth was taken through three color filters -- violet, blue and green -- and recombined to produce the color image. The background features in the image are artifacts resulting from the magnification.

En esta excepcional imagen tomada el 19 de Julio de 2013, la cámara gran angular de la sonda Cassini de la Nasa ha fotografiado en la misma imagen los Anillos de Saturno junto con el planeta Tierra y la Luna.

Yamanas

South of the Island of Tierra del Fuego, separated from her by the Beagle Channel, extends in the Pacific Ocean the Archipelago of Cape Horn, country of the "Yámanas".

For these human beings, the canoe, anan, was the dwelling during most of its life, Eternal navigators, magnificent sailors, its small women of 1.49 ms. Of medium height, were those who preferred to roam. The man, 1.58 m. As an average of stature, lurking in the prow of the anan, armed with harpoons, arrows and sling, fulfilled its role of meat supplier to the family: birds, fish, elephants and sea lions. Sometimes made with chungungo skin, a small loincloth for the adults and “capita” that covered little more of the back. Curled up inside the unan, they needed no more protection. The rain, the snow, or the icy wind did not torment their naked bodies of broad chests, strong arms and short legs.

Jemmy Button, Yámana. (1815-1864)

He was 14 years old, his name was Orundellico. The English called him Jemmy Button, they got it in exchange for a nacre button. Jemmy had great intelligence and adaptability and made connections with the crew of the HMS Beagle. He was taken to England to be exhibited and civilized. After a year in London, Jemmy decides to return to Cape Horn, to his seas and canoe.

(Ampton Hall, Suffolk, 1805 - Norwood, Surrey, 1865) British marine and astronomer. He entered the English Navy in 1819. As commander of the HMS Beagle (1828), he explored the coasts of South America around Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego (1828-1830).

Charles Darwin, British Naturalist. 1809 - 1882

The theory of the origin of species is based on chance and natural selection imposed by an external environment. Darwin postulates that living organisms evolve not by their transformations in complexity, but by their adaptation to the environment in which they evolve.

Dwelling of the ancestors with fire

The beauty of an untamed land created with the violence of nature.
Southern Chile. Villarrica.

The original name of the volcano is Quitralpillán, which in mapudungún means "Dwelling of the ancestors with fire". The volcano is permanently active and is considered one of the continent's most active volcanoes, its smoke rising from quite a distance during the day. During clear nights, one can often observe, from great distances, the fascinating reflection of incandescent lava on its summit.

The naughties of San Pedro

As the aborigines did before, todays scientist continue their search of our cosmic origines.

The Little Goats are stars that are crowded together; it’s a group of several stars, but they’re bunched together, not spread out. We call them the Little Goats because they are like animals that always run in groups.

Ramona Paucar, ollagüe (The Pleiades or Seven Little Goats).

Currently under construction in the thin, dry air of northern Chile’s Atacama Desert at an altitude of 5,000 meters above sea level, ALMA will initially be composed of 66 high-precision antennas working together at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, with a possible extension in the future.

Thanks to its high resolution and sensitivity, ALMA will open an entirely new “window” on the Universe, allowing scientists to unravel longstanding and important astronomical mysteries, in search of our Cosmic Origins.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is a revolutionary instrument in its scientific concept, its engineering design, and its organization as a global scientific endeavor…

Deception Island.

In the Antarctic peninsula, someone tries to complete an heroic feat.

Original Soundtrack by another pocket story.

Deception Island. Antarctica.

Coordinates 62°58′37″S 60°39′00″W

Situated off the coast of Antarctica, Deception Island was once used for whaling, but now houses tourists and research centers.

Ricardo “Cate” López. Chilean swimmer.

Julieta and Cate wanted to swim in the same place (Deception Island from Punta Perford to Punta Collins) and the same distance (1 mile) as Tiburon (former swimmer) did in 32 minutes.

They traveled by airplane from Punta Arenas to Rey Jorge Island on February 24th and then they took an Ice boat to Deception Island. On February 27th, they both swam in 0.5°C (33°F) water. Julieta took 36 minutes and Cate finished in 22 minutes.

" My first sensation at the moment of putting a foot in such cold water was traumatic, I felt as if a thousand needles nailed me, I felt the same thing when I put my hands and finally my head, feeling that at no time I stopped feeling, but seeing as Juliet (She cleverly protected by booties, gloves and neoprene hood), I could not give up and abandon a few meters, so I only thought that the faster he swam, the more he would get out of there."

Victor “Tiburón” Contreras

He is a technical electrician, but became known for his exploits swimming distances of up to 40 kilometers in oceans like the Pacific and the Atlantic. Only 3 hours and 27 minutes delayed covering the 22 km of the Strait of Gibraltar. Everything a record. Without having the impressive physique of the great swimmers, Victor "Tiburón" Contreras, born in the Port of Valparaiso, was never afraid of the sea: at the age of eight he was already submerged in the depths. Years later, even the sharks respected him.

"It was only when I swam in the Strait of Magellan that I covered myself with sea lion grease to maintain my body temperature. However, it was difficult to remove the fat and, above all, its smell. It needed three days to stop the stench of the product from emanating from the body."
